Clueless is getting a TV sequel, with original star Alicia Silverstone returning.
The 1995 comedy saw the actor play Cher Horowitz, a wealthy high school student who helps a new student find popularity and love, before discovering her own feelings about someone in her life. The movie, loosely based on Jane Austen’s Emma, was a box office hit and has remained popular with audiences ever since.
Now, Variety reports that a continuation of the story is being developed for Paramount+, with Silverstone reprising the role of Horowitz for a six-episode run that begins shooting in Los Angeles next summer. Silverstone will executive produce alongside the original movie’s director, Amy Heckerling.
“Clueless is coming home,” Jane Wiseman, head of Originals for Paramount+, said in a statement. “Thirty-one years ago, Alicia Silverstone’s Cher Horowitz captivated audiences with her signature chic style, sharp wit and relentless optimism, helping make Clueless a box office hit and instant pop culture classic. We’re especially proud to be filming this much-anticipated series in Los Angeles, honouring its starring role in the original film while investing in the city’s exceptional talent and crews.”
The show had previously been in development with rival streamer Peacock, until it was announced in April that the company would no longer be going ahead with the series. That came after a separate spin-off, focused on Stacey Dash’s character Dionne ‘Dee’ Davenport, was announced in 2019, but also never came to fruition.
In 2020, Silverstone shared an anecdote about her then eight-year-old son’s idea for a Clueless sequel. “One night we were laying in bed and he wrote Clueless Part 2 and what and where Cher would be,” she recalled. “It was unbelievable what he thought. She was an alcoholic but he didn’t say those words. He was like, ‘She drinks a lot and maybe she’s a makeup artist? Like a professional makeup artist.’”
