The first reactions to Spider-Man: Brand New Day have emerged, with critics praising the action as well as the performance of Sadie Sink.

Tom Holland’s fourth solo outing as Peter Parker/Spider-Man sees him starting over, following the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home where the world forgot he exists. Protecting New York anonymously, he begins to investigate a new threat while also experiencing evolutions in his powers. The film, released July 29, also features Stranger Things actor Sadie Sink in an undisclosed role.

Critics have posted their first reactions following a screening of the movie, with the majority of verdicts on X (formerly Twitter) being positive.

Film journalist Zach Pope wrote: “#SpidermanBrandNewDay is everything I hoped it would be! A tragic yet poetic odyssey about what it truly means to feel alone, only to realize you may not have to be alone… It’s thematically beautiful while still delivering an endlessly entertaining Spider-Man adventure that never feels overstuffed. Nearly every character serves Peter Parker’s journey, making every moment feel purposeful. Tom Holland gives the best performance as Peter… but somehow, Sadie Sink might just steal the entire movie. Best action/web swinging we have ever had!”

Creator Matt Nando Kelly posted: “Listen. #SpidermanBrandNewDay is my new favorite Spider-Man movie. It is absolutely incredible. Looks gorgeous. Writing is sharp. Performances are excellent. I was smiling the entire time. Even teared up. I am SHOCKED at how good this is.”

Podcaster Anthony Gagliardi enthused: “#SpiderManBrandNewDay is AWE-INSPIRING. ABSOLUTELY SPECTACULAR. Destin Daniel Cretton crafts a bold and mature take on our favourite web-head. Tom Holland cements himself as the best Spider-Man to don the mask. Amazing action sequences. Sensational production design. The defining Spider-Man cinematic experience.”

Fandango’s Erik Davis added: “[Director] Destin Daniel Cretton’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day injects a ferocious energy into Spidey’s latest adventure, delivering all the thrills you’d expect from a Tom Holland Spider-Man movie while feeling deeper, more thoughtful and more mature than the previous trilogy.”

“That maturity extends beyond the story to the action, with Cretton crafting some of my favorite #SpiderMan fight sequences of the Holland era. Part detective story, part psychological thriller, part buddy comedy (the Spider-Man/Punisher banter is so much fun), it stretches in exciting new directions before becoming a genuine love letter to the fans. When you see it, you’ll get it. And yes, the Sadie Sink mystery absolutely pays off. She’s perfect.”

Spider-Man: Brand New Day is the final Marvel Cinematic Universe movie before Avengers: Doomsday arrives in December. Tom Holland recently revealed that he was one of the first people told about Robert Downey Jr’s return in the title role of Doctor Doom.

Elsewhere, the actor also revealed that the next movie he is working is a biopic of Fred Astaire, in which he plans to do all his own dancing without doubles.
