More than 40 years after Glastonbury festival started The Rolling Stones have headlined the Pyramid Stage for the first time.
The band arrived on stage to a soundtrack of jungle noise and tribal drums, combined with an intro tape which featured the voice of Michael Eavis.
Fireworks were set off as the band launched into their first track ‘Jumpin’ Jack Flash’. Straight after that they played ‘It’s Only Rock ‘N’ Roll (But I Like It) and ‘Paint It Black’.
Mick Jagger was sporting a green sequined jacket, while Keith Richards rocked a blue headband.
An hour of the band’s performance was broadcast on BBC Two.
The band played a wide selection of songs from their 50-year career including ‘Gimme Shelter’ and ‘Miss You’.
Keith Richards took lead vocals on two tracks, ‘Happy’ and ‘You Got The Silver’.
The band played ‘Doom And Gloom’, the lead single from the 50th Anniversary Compilation Album released at the end of 2012.
“We’re not going to do the whole of ‘Satanic Majesties’ but here you go,” said Jagger before leading the band into ‘2,000 Light Years From Home’.
“And Ronnie Wood, he’s not too shabby,” said Keef, of his fellow guitarist.
During ‘Sympathy For The Devil’ a gigantic, colourful bird sculpture appeared on the top of the Pyramid stage, its wings flapping above the crowd.
“(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction” was the final song of the band’s two and a half hour set.
