On Friday night (November 13) at The Roundhouse in London, Suede premiered their new album ‘Night Thoughts’ in full, playing behind a screen showing an accompanying 50-minute film directed by NME photographer and film-maker Roger Sargent.
At various points throughout the film, they band were lit so as to be visible through the translucent screen – a haunting presence.
The band then rattled through a flurry of huge hits including ‘Trash’ and ‘Animal Nitrate’, which saw Brett Anderson swaggering along the top of the monitors and guitarist Richard Oakes unspooling his most stratospheric riffs.
The ‘Treats’ came in the form of rarely-played album tracks and b-sides. Following a euphoric ‘Heroine’, featuring one of the 90’s greatest hooks in the line “my Marilyn come to my slum for an hour”, the moody ‘Pantomime Horse’ got at outing…
The main set then wound up with another blast of hits, as ‘New Generation’, ‘So Young’ and ‘Metal Mickey’ sent the crowd into paroxysms.
Sure enough, they finished the show with momentous ‘To The Birds’, the hardcore fan’s dream encore.
The following night at the same venue, Suede encored with the last three songs from ‘Dog Man Star’, dedicated to the victims of the Paris terrorist attacks.
