Last weekend, Team NME headed to Lisbon to soak up the sun. It wasn’t the weather that drew us to the Portuguese capital though, but the return of NOS Alive. One of our favourite European festivals, this year it boasted headline sets from Pixies, Radiohead and Arcade Fire as well as stand-out shows from the likes of Tame Impala, Robert Plant and Wolf Alice. Here’s ten of the best moments captured by photographer Ben Bentley:
Wolf Alice’s Theo Ellis and Joel Amey first visited Lisbon on holiday when they were 19 – a trip that partly inspired their song named after the city. They returned to play the Portugese capital for the first time at NOS Alive, and afterwards Ellis wrote on Twitter: “Lisbon. That was up there. You have me in bits. Thank you so much”
Everyone was having fun at NOS Alive this year, but nobody – nobody – was having more fun than Arcade Fire’s Régine Chassagne.
Foals frontman Yannis Philippakis doesn’t care about personal space.
The Chemical Brothers brought NOS Alive’s main stage to a close on Thursday night armed with nothing more than some impressive laser visuals and a set full of absolute bangers.
Tame Impala’s set seemed to encourage nudity in the Portuguese crowd, with both men and women flashing the big screen. “I see what you’re doing down there, Portugal,” noted frontman Kevin Parker. “I see you taking off your clothes. Hey, I’m kidding. Do what you want – it’s a festival, right?”
The 1975’s Matt Healy shows off the range of his influences by wearing death metal band Cannibal Corpse’s T-shirt while displaying a tattoo, ‘Weak Messages Create Bad Situations’, inspired by British illustrator David Shrigley.
