Some artists are happy in a t-shirt and jeans; some go the extra mile, whether that be bringing some razzle-dazzle to fields with sequins and glitter or donning varying extremes of PVC. At festivals this year, that was no different, be they headliners or newcomers. Here are our favourite onstage outfits from summer 2018.
Maggie Rogers
Maggie’s blue caped jumpsuit was designed by none other than Christian Joy. Don’t recognise that name? Minus 100 indie points – she’s the creative genius behind all of Karen O’s onstage costumes too.

Björk
Trust Björk to turn up to All Points East decked in some avant-garde costumery. Describing her outfit is not the easiest of jobs, but let’s just say her mask made her look like the innards of a flower, white stamen sprouting from her face.

The Struts
Regardless of what you think of their music, there’s no denying The Struts have got a unique sense of style. How about this tassel and glitter combo?!

St Vincent
Looking like a neon cowboy from the future, St Vincent’s Annie Clark made bright, glossy PVC bodysuits and complementing boots and arm-warmers her look this summer. Can’t say we’d have wanted to be her when the post-sunset chill set in, but it was certainly a striking look.

Grace Jones
If you thought Grace Jones would appear at Bestival looking anything less than the best-dressed person on site, you would be mistaken. Not many could pull of this African-inspired look, but then not many people are Grace Jones.

Brandon Flowers
Las Vegas might be glitzy but it’s also a little tacky. Behold! Brandon Flowers embodied just that idea with his head-to-toe gold suit this summer, looking like the blingiest showman in the casino.

Declan McKenna
Much less tacky was Declan McKenna’s attempts at bringing some sparkle to our festival season. Case in point: this glorious robe, ready to glimmer in the Coachella sun.

Olly Alexander
The boiler-suit is a classic look and Years & Years’ Olly Alexander made it his own at Boardmasters. Is he going down the garage to work on some motors? Nah, he’s just gonna put in one of the best pop performances of the summer. Of course!

Beyoncé
Beyoncé might have many stunning outfits in her closets, but at Coachella she opted to keep it simple. For weekend one, she donned a yellow sweater; weekend two, pink. Both featured symbols of black power on the crest, while her other outfits in the performances held similar messages.
