Mumford and Sons tonight (June 30) brought Glastonbury 2013 to a close with their debut headline set on the Pyramid Stage.
Beginning with ‘Lovers Eyes’, Marcus Mumford then told the crowd, “We came for a party,” before playing ‘I Will Wait’.
The stage production for the most part was kept simple, the big screens largely showing monochrome images, but lights and lasers projected from the stage.
“Thank you very much Glastonbury,” said keyboard player Ben Lovett after ‘White Blank Page’. “Have you had a good weekend? Yeah, it’s been alright, pretty alright,” he said, before thanking festival organiser Michael Eavis.
Lovett then said, “Here’s a quiet one,” before the band played the low-key ‘Timshel’. ‘Little Lion Man’ followed, introduced by Marcus Mumford, who said, “Shall we have a dance together, Glastonbury?”
They returned to play ‘Babel’, the title track from the band’s 2012’s second album, and hit single ‘The Cave’. Mumford then announced that they were to bring out some friends to close out the festival, and introduced The Vaccines and Vampire Weekend.
Having said they selected the perfect song for the occasion, they then played a cover of Joe Cocker’s arrangement of The Beatles’ ‘With A Little Help From My Friends’, during which the ‘Phoenix’ on the top of the Pyramid Stage came alive and produced flames.
