Bright – a new supernatural cop thriller starring Will Smith – is rumoured to be almost acquired by Netflix for exclusive rights, it has emerged today (March 10).
The film – coming from Suicide Squad director David Ayers – sees a world in which supernatural beings and humans co habit, with a special police division handling supernatural-related crimes. Smith plays a human cop who is forced to work with an ‘orc’ (played by Joel Edgerton) in order to find a powerful wand for which others would kill to obtain.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Netflix is looking to secure ‘Bright’ to it’s exclusive roster., although the report notes that “the deal is far from done”. However, Netflix are reportedly sitting at the top of a bidding war and are currently in negotiations to acquire the rights.
Netflix broke into the world of film with Beasts of No Nation starring Idris Elba.
GettyAs Deadline reported earlier this month (March), screenwriter Max Landis (Chronicle, American Ultra) has penned a “contemporary cop thriller, but with fantastical elements” and apparently “a major twist.”
In the meantime, Smith is currently shooting David Frankel’s Collateral Beauty with Kate Winslet, Keira Knightley, and Jonah Hill.Meanwhile Edgerton is re-teaming with Midnight Special director Jeff Nichols for the true story historical drama, Mildred Loving.

Meanwhile, in February 2016, director David Ayer suggested the world might not be ready for Jared Leto’s take on The Joker.
With a new trailer for Ayer’s eagerly-anticipated super-villain movie arriving on January 20, the director has spoken about working with the 30 Seconds To Mars frontman as he put his own stamp on the iconic comic book baddie.
Discussing Leto’s intensity, Ayer told USA Today: “The commitment to the role, you’re going to see that really shine through in a way that you’re not used to seeing actors in movies really go all the way with (in) every little moment and every little breath. You’re going to get taken on a journey with Jared that I don’t know that everyone’s ready for, but I think it will be amazing.”
“It really made an event when he would show up on set,” Ayer also said of Leto. “There was almost a pageantry to him, which did translate into the character and the power on screen he has.”
In October 2015, Leto’s Suicide Squad co-star Will Smith revealed that he has never spoken to the 30 Seconds To Mars frontman out of character because he was “all in” as the Joker during filming. Last summer it was reported that Leto had showered his Suicide Squad cast-mates with unusual gifts including a dead hog, a live rat and bullets.
Meanwhile, Leto has memorably described portraying The Joker as “like giving birth out of my prickhole”. Suicide Squad, which also stars Margot Robbie, Joel Kinnaman and Cara Delevingne, opens in cinemas on August 5.
