Apple TV sci-fi series Silo has received rave reviews for its third season, with critics describing it as setting a “new standard” and being the most “impressive” show on TV.
Rebecca Ferguson returns as Juliette, one of thousands living in underground silos in a dystopian future society. The new season shows her alive but suffering from memory loss after the explosive finale of season two left her fate uncertain. As the silo recovers from a rebellion, new threats emerge, and Juliette discovers new information about the world around her.
Season three currently has a perfect 100 per cent score on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 16 reviews. Critics have praised the depth of storytelling, and how it maintains the viewer’s interest when other series may be struggling at this point.
Tania Hussain of Collider wrote: “Three seasons in, Silo somehow still finds new ways to surprise. While some mysteries can collapse under their own weight, especially with an ensemble this big, the show manages the opposite. Using every new revelation to deepen its characters and the world around them, Silo proves once again why it’s not only Apple TV’s best shows, but also one of the best shows currently on television. Thoughtful, gripping, and beautifully made, it sets a new standard for what prestige sci-fi can be.”
Reflecting on the show’s somewhat underrated reputation, Katie Doll of CBR concluded: “It’s a shame that Silo continues to go relatively unnoticed in the sci-fi and dystopian realm, and even just within Apple TV’s stacked library. But its status as a hidden gem doesn’t undercut just how magnificent it truly is. Each and every season tops the last. At this rate, Silo is heading for a stellar ending that will be hard to beat, and perhaps then, people will finally recognise the spellbinding allure of Silo.”
Matt Fowler of IGN described the season as “an awesome narrative two-hander, shifting back and forth constantly between Juliette’s latest and greatest clash with the Head of IT and the past years leading up to humanity’s confinement in the subterranean silos. It provides a ton of backstory and answers about the ruined world, bringing both timelines together at the end for a fairly savage revelation. Season three feels like a critical culmination of the first two seasons in regards to what Juliette discovered in Silo 17 and what our other characters learned from the season two rebellion. It’s great, exciting storytelling.”
Joonatan Itkonen of Region Free went even further, writing: “The final two episodes of the season are some of the most intense and brilliant TV I’ve seen all year. By the end, I was on the edge of my seat, grasping at the sofa cushion, both relieved it was over and angry that I had to wait another year for more. If it sticks the landing, Silo can be regarded as an all-time great series, regardless of genre or decade. It is one of the most impressive, breathlessly entertaining shows ever made.”
The first episode of Silo season three is on Apple TV now, with new episodes arriving weekly until September 4. A fourth and final season is currently in development.
Rebecca Ferguson’s next big screen project will be Dune Part Three, and in March the first images of her character and others arrived in anticipation of the blockbuster finale.
