David Benioff – co-creator and showrunner for Game Of Thrones – has suggested that seasons 7 and 8 of the show, which are widely expected to be the final seasons, may run with fewer episodes than previous outings.
HBO have responded quickly following Benioff’s interview with Variety, published yesterday (April 14), to call his comments “purely speculative.”
Benioff told the American publication about plans for after season 6, which is due to air shortly, saying “I think we’re down to our final 13 episodes after this season. We’re heading into the final lap. That’s the guess, though nothing is yet set in stone, but that’s what we’re looking at.”
HBO responded with a statement reading “conversations about the end of Game of Thrones and the number of episodes of future seasons is purely speculative. As is customary, HBO will sit with Dan [Weiss, Benioff’s co-creator] and David to discuss the details once a decision has been made to go forward with season 7.”
The ‘decision to go forward’ part of HBO’s statement is a reference to Game of Thrones not yet having officially been renewed for season 7 or 8.

Game of Thrones actress Emilia Clarke may have revealed the fate of character Jon Snow back in February at the Film Independent Spirit Awards in Santa Monica.
While presenting the award for Best First Feature with US actor Nate Parker, she was asked by Parker if Snow, who’s played by Londoner Kit Harrington, is still breathing. He told her to wink if he is, and she winked, shortly before the camera cut away.
On the flip side, last month Harrington told Digital Spy: “People didn’t want me to die, but he’s dead. So there you go, everyone has to get used to it.”
