A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms has surprised fans with a shock death in the latest episode.
The series, a prequel to Game Of Thrones, premiered on HBO last month and the fifth episode aired on Sunday (February 15), ending with the first death of the series.
The episode saw Dunk, played by Peter Claffey, in a trial by combat aided by several men, including Bertie Carvel’s Prince Baelor Targaryen, who is the heir to the Iron Throne.
It looked as though they all came out of the battle alive – albeit not unscathed – with Dunk and Baelor talking. Baelor then removed his helmet to reveal that the back of his skull was crushed. He collapsed from the injury moments later, dying in Dunk’s arms.
Discussing the moment, showrunner and co-creator Ira Parker told the New York Post, “We were staying pretty close to the source material.”
He added: “There is this certain type of death that always used to shake me when I’d see it on TV or in movies as a kid, which is like, when somebody is held together by two cars that have smashed into them… It’s like, ‘You can talk to him for five minutes.’ But you know that as soon as we move these cars, they’re going to die.
“Basically, the situation that we have with Baelor is that his life is being held together by the fact that he has his helmet on. He’s already a dead man, he just doesn’t realize it yet. And so, when that helmet comes off and he dies right there, man, it’s the most brutal type of death.”
The death left fans surprised and divided, particularly as the series, on the whole, has had a lighter feel than Game Of Thrones.

Another wrote: “I haven’t yet watched A Knight of Seven Kingdoms but seeing all these clips/reels of the last episode and I feel terribly sad about Baelor,” adding a crying emoji.
One Reddit user described the episode as ” an absolute masterpiece of cinema,” while another wrote, “This episode was incredible,” praising the cinematography but adding: “Feel like the show is taking a bit of a dark turn, though. What started out as what seemed to be a pretty light-hearted show is starting to have a pretty big tonal shift. Interested to see if it continues down this path or not.”
Another likened the moment to the Red Wedding massacre in the third season of Game Of Thrones, writing: “Game Of Thrones‘ universe and the reminder that we can’t have nice things. That gut wrenching, slow realisation of what was happening was up there with the Red Wedding episode for me.”
A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms is set about a century before the events of Game Of Thrones based on the Tales of Dunk and Egg novellas from George R.R. Martin, and it’s the second spin-off after House Of The Dragon. It follows Dunk, a hedge knight, and his squire, Egg (Dexter Sol Ansell), who’s also Baelor’s nephew. It’s been renewed for a second season, expected to air in 2027.
NME gave the first season a three-star review, writing: “A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms is a relatively slight affair. Even though the six episodes clock in at around 30 minutes each, it still takes a while to find its feet. The second half of the season is stronger than the first but even then, there are wobbles. The dramatic penultimate episode is padded with an exposition-heavy flashback that really saps its momentum.”
