Mariah Carey has marked the start of the festive period, transforming from Morticia Addams into Mrs Claus in a new social media video.
Carey’s grand annual countdown to Christmas on November 1 has become seasonal marker in recent years. Last month, she shared a funny social media post where she was on a private jet to “the North Pole” – but she told the pilot, “Not yet!” not wanting to be rushed into the holiday period.
On Halloween, the pop icon finally declared that “it’s time” to gear up for the holidays in a festive teaser on her Instagram. It starts in black and white, showing Carey dressed up as Morticia Addams from The Addams Family tangoing through a haunted ballroom with a dancer portraying Gomez Addams while an eerie version of ‘All I Want For Christmas Is You’ plays in the background.
A cupboard then opens and a Mrs Claus outfit is hidden behind a pane of glass. A clock then counts down the days as pages of a calendar are ripped off until November 1. On that date, the glass shatters, revealing Carey in the aforementioned suit while sitting by a decorated Christmas tree. She sings the iconic line from ‘All I Want For Christmas Is You’ (“It’s timeeee”) and Gomez transforms into a snowman.
‘All I Want For Christmas Is You’ originally appeared on Carey’s 1994 fourth studio album ‘Merry Christmas’ – an album she reluctantly made, according to her 2020 memoir The Meaning of Mariah Carey. This year, the seasonal classic turned 30-years-old. During that time, it became the first holiday song to stream over one billion times on Spotify and topped the Billboard Hot 100 numerous times since its release, holding the record for most weeks at Number One for a Christmas song.
To celebrate the song’s lasting legacy, Carey is going to embark on the ‘Christmas Time’ tour – where she will do a run of shows in North America for the rest of the year, starting next Wednesday (November 6) at California’s Yaamava Theatre. Fans can find any available tickets here.
