U2 are set to finally headline Glastonbury festival tonight (June 24), as the first day of scheduled music kicks off at the Somerset bash.
Bono and co are heading up the Pyramid Stage, playing after Morrissey. They were due to headline the bash last year, but had to pull out after the frontman suffered a back injury, and were replaced by Gorillaz.
The Smiths’ former mouthpiece Morrissey, meanwhile, has been on tour recently and is expected to preview songs from his forthcoming new solo album at Worthy Farm. But new tracks aren’t the only things on the agenda for the singer – it’s recently been revealed that he’s planning on making friends with former Manchester City footballer Joey Barton at the bash.
Elsewhere on the bill Mumford and Sons are gearing up for a big slot, playing before Primal Scream on the Other Stage. Bobby Gillespie’s gang are bringing their classic album ’Screamadelica’ to the festival, while Mumfords fans will be on the lookout for new material during their set.
Adding a bit of mystery to the event, some ‘special guests’ are due to play on the Park Stage at 8pm (BST). Bands who have played unannounced shows at Glastonbury in recent years include , , ’s and and – so interest is sure to be huge on site for that slot. will have a full report after the show.
