Rap icon Missy Elliott and more are to join The First Lady Michelle Obama for a keynote panel discussion at SXSW, it has recently been revealed (March 15).
As previously reported, both Michelle and President Barack Obama would be making speeches at the SXSW music conference which runs in Austin, Texas between 11-20 March.
Mr Obama gave his opening speech last week (March 11) at SXSW interactive, which reportedly saw Mr Obama skip Nancy Reagan’s funeral in favour of the music and technology conference. He spoke with the editor of The Texas Tribune, Evan Smith, about civic engagement in the 21st century.
Getty/NMEMichelle is set to talk about her Let Girls Learn initiative and charity on Wednesday 16 March at The Austin Convention Centre. It has been announced that Missy Elliott and rapper-turned-actress Queen Latifah will join her on the special panel.
The Let Girls Learn initiative, which seeks to help and break borders of education for young girls around the world. As part of Women’s History Month, Mrs Obama will address and make a call to action in supporting the 62 million girls that are out of school today.
“I can’t imagine a better way to celebrate our event’s 30th year than to welcome both the President and First Lady to SXSW,” said SXSW Co-founder Roland Swenson in an official statement earlier in the month (March 2016) “As each new generation comes up at SXSW they look for ways they can be of service, and it’s important to reflect and support that message. President and Mrs. Obama’s visit here will inspire attendees to that purpose.”
