Music fans across the globe are remembering Joe Strummer, on what would have been The Clash frontman’s 66th birthday.
The punk icon, who died in 2002, became one of the most influential figures in British music during his tenure as frontman of the iconic London band.
After The Clash split up in 1986, Strummer went on to form Joe Strummer and The Mesceleros. He also collaborated with a wide variety of acts across British music – including The Pogues.
Posting on Twitter, The Pogues wrote: “Born 66 years ago today, Joe Strummer. Clash man and sometime Pogue”.
They accompanied it with a link to a vintage performance of the two acts duetting on ‘London Calling’.

Fans have also gathered at the ‘Plaza de Joe Strummer’. The town square was opened in Granada in 2013 to commemorate his love for the Andalusian city, which Strummer referenced in the song ‘Spanish Bombs’.
