Armie Hammer has discussed being brought to tears when he was offered his new film, Citizen Vigilante.
The actor rose to prominence in the late 2010s thanks to performances in films like The Social Network, The Lone Ranger, and Call Me By Your Name. He was one of Hollywood’s most in-demand stars, at one point linked to the role of Batman, however he fell out of favour with the film industry following several allegations of abuse.
In 2021, he faced public accusations of sexual assault from multiple women, all of which he has denied. No charges were brought against the actor following an investigation, but Hammer was dropped by his agency and forced to leave the film Shotgun Wedding with Jennifer Lopez. His role in Taika Waititi’s comedy Next Goal Wins also was re-shot, with his character being taken over by Will Arnett.
The actor has not been seen in a major film release since 2022’s Death On The Nile, but is mounting a career comeback with recent release Frontier Crucible and forthcoming movie Citizen Vigilante, playing a man seeking justice against criminals.
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, he recalled the moment he got the offer, which was his first since the scandal.
“I’m pretty sure I cried,” he added. “It was just this moment where I was like: I’m going to get to do the thing that I love more than anything — other than my children.” He then added: “I would have done a fucking cat food commercial. I just wanted to work again.”
He also spoke about the anxiety he felt going back to the profession. “I was scared shitless until the moment Uwe [Boll, director] said action for the first time,” he says. “And then I was like — ‘Wait. I do know how to do this.’ There’s a reason I had the success I had.”
In February, Hammer described the allegations surrounding his personal life as “the greatest thing that ever happened to me” after gaining “a sense of distance and perspective from it”.
