Elite Gymnastics are yet to release a full-length, but they don’t seem worried about running out of ideas.
Dabbling in electro, industrial, hip-hop and just about everything in between (and beyond), the Minneapolis duo have put out a staggering 4 EPs in the past 15 months.
And last week, without any advance warning, they dropped two more – Ruin 1 and Ruin 2. This time, don’t bother looking for shock mashes of Blow’s Hacienda house and Waka Flocka Flame’s crunk balderdash, because James Brooks and Josh Clancy have dialled back the kitsch and offered their least sample-reliant set of songs yet.
It’s presented in two ways: ‘Ruin 1’ is the heavier of the two, with loping drum fills and trebly stabs of synth, while ‘Ruin 2’ plays like the aftermath, settling into an eerie, post-apocalyptic calm. Rumour has it both will see a well-deserved vinyl release through Acephale in the coming months.
Here’s the ‘Ruin 1’ version of ‘Omamori’, followed by download links to each ep in its entirety below:
